I am looking for any information available that would give comparison between SQL Server 2005 BI capabilities/features and other tier 1 products such as Business Objects, Cognos, etc.... Has anyone come across anything yet Things I am looking for are more along the lines of the metadata information. I have found that Business Objects has an impressive tool called Data Integrator and was wondering what SQL 2005 has in comparison to this tool...thanks!!

Thanks for the reply Jamie, both the links on the blog are dead :)
I will go to the forrester site and see what I can find.
What I am r-e-a-l-l-y looking for is what microsoft has in 2005 that would give some of the same funtionality the Data Integrator does, things like giving you a way to track the impact of changes to a data item/column in a table, metadata documentation, you can drill down to a particular data item, and actually apply a comment to the item to explain what it is, ability to track a piece of data from a report back to the source that it came from, all of which lead to better internal control, and a better chance at getting to a "single truth" (although I feel that is a dream at times) so you can have a single source of data to reduce time spent on the ever popular excercise of tracking back to why this report doesn't match that report....have you seen the Data Integrator tool
Anyway, just hoping someone else has been down this path, I will be installing 2005 in the next month so I will dig through it at some point anyway. Thanks again

While this doesn’t directly answer your question about metadata management support in SSIS (there are others more qualified to answer this and I will point this thread out to them), I do feel compelled to point out that from a BI platform point of view SQL Server provides a complete set of BI tools and servers. SQL Server 2005 includes Integration Services, Analysis Services and Reporting Services and between these you get support for ETL, OLAP, Data Mining and Reporting along with a full blown professional development environment.
The synergy between these technologies extends to shared and consistent metadata.
If you haven’t already, take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/solutions/bi/default.mspx .

If you want an impartial view of what SSIS has to offer I have a link to a good article on my blog here: http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2005/02/28/1082.aspx in the comments section.

I wonder if you have managed to get any further information here. I work for a UK law firm and we are looking to build our first Datawarehouse. We currently use Crystal Reports and Crystal Enterprise for our current reporting requirements and BO consultancies who have shown us the BO Data Integrator and I agree with you that the meta data functionality was excellent and key feature. Its also being sold as an easy to use tool for non-technical staff. However I see SQL 2005 IS as a possible alternative that will also save us money. A doc comparing the 2 products would be excellent but I doubt anyone has done this. If you have gathered any further info since you posted your message and willing to share I would be most grateful.
Thanks
