I am trying to install the latest Vista December CTP build on a Microsoft VPC. I have the latest version of VPC with the latest SP. The Vista product key from MSDN works fine.
The problem that I am experiencing is that I can not get past the "Where do you want to install Windows " screen where you must specify the hard drive and partition to install Windows. After selecting the unallocated virtual hard drive space, creating a new partition, and formatting the virtual drive, the following message is displayed on the bottom of the screen:
"The partition you selected is not ready for installation. Please restart the computer and verify that the disk is enabled in your computer BIOS settings."
Has anyone else experienced this problem
Any solutions or work arounds
Thanks,
Mark

The only thing that you might want to add to the above step is a format of the drive to NTFS.

What size are you allocating to your VPC I recommend you do at least 10gig. Vista has a hard limit on 8 gig HD req.

the VMWare support team has made available a document related to these issues and how to install Windows Vista under VMWare Tools.
Follow this link, it as some important information you might want to take a look at prior installing Windows Vista if you are going to use the VMWare Tools.

I got the same message installing on VMWare. Below is what VMWare's support reccomends when this occurs.
Installing the Guest Operating System
1. Insert the Windows Vista CD in the CD-ROM drive.
2. Power on the virtual machine to start installing Windows Vista.
3. If using a blank hard disk: When the Windows Vista installer menu appears, choose the first option, Install Now.
If installing over an existing guest operating system: Skip to step 9.
4. Press Shift-F10 to open a command prompt.
5. Start the disk partitioning utility.
diskpart
6. Enter the following commands to partition the hard disk:
select disk 0
create partition primary
7. When the partitioning process is complete, click the Reset button to reboot the virtual machine.
8. As the virtual machine begins to reboot, while the VMware logo appears on the screen, click inside the virtual machine window, then press Esc to get to the BIOS boot menu. Choose CD-ROM Drive as the boot device, then continue installing Windows Vista beta.
9. In certain Windows Vista builds, the installer chooses an incorrect default in the screen titled Choose your installation destination. It shows a partition with 0 MB free and makes that partition the default destination.
At that screen, you must change the choice to the disk (instead of the partition), then click Continue.
10. Follow the remaining installation steps as you would for a physical machine.

I just went out to the MSDN download site to get the December version of Vista. For 32 bit build 5270 i see in the description:
This build is not compatible with Virtual PC or Virtual Server.
What gives Can I follow the various posts in this thread and get it to work, or is it hopeless.
If it is hopeless, when will an RC be ready that will work with VPC

Thanks for your posts. Using the command prompt to create the partition and formating the virtual drive to NTFS solved the issue. For anybody else needing this work around, step #8 is not necessary in Microsoft Virtual PC. A reset after formatting allows the installation to complete.
I was quite surprised that the Virtual harddrive size of the December CTP build was roughly 8 GB where the Vista Beta build (5119....I believe) created a virtual harddrive that was roughly 3.5 GB.
I can't wait for the install to complete so I can see what takes up the other 4.5 GB.

Mark
