Video capture

I am writing a video capture program, which works fine for a lower end capture device, but I've bought one which does MPEG encoding on board. The software that came with the unit works great, but my DX code can only see it as a TV tuner, and cannot show any sort of preview. I suspect this is because it's doing something non-standard to stream MPG - is there anything I can do about this
