anyone knows how to fix the above error I want to do a clean installation on a Dell D600 which has a 60Gb HDD and 1Gb RAM. The DVD ISO boots up fine and after i click on Install Vista it gets stuck on "Starting Installation"....I've formatted the drive with Win PE 2.0 and running vista install again but it still gives me the same error I'll be really grateful if someone can tell me what's going on ! !

Does your Dell have built-in wireless If so, try disabling it in the BIOS. I had the same problem with the December CTP of Vista on a Dell laptop, and was able to work around it that way. You may be able to get the wireless working after installing Vista by using Windows Update to get the latest drivers for your hardware, then enabling wireless in the BIOS.

I had the same problem but on my desktop. When I disconnected all extra pheripherials/devices (including internal N/W card, Sound Card, Printer, WebCam etc), it installed properly.

Now the OS is working but the Audio works just 30% of the time, network works 40% of the time. I'm so unlucky. (Randomly Audio won't work and the network disconnects and never connects until I reboot)

I attempted to install 5308 from a DVD i received from the Vista Airlift here in Redmond, WA.

I run into this issue where it gets to a screen with "Starting Installation" gets through part of the installation then my PC reboots itself bringing me back to the "Starting Installation" screen.

My system specs is as below:

Motherboard: ASUS ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Crossfire (A8R-MVP )

    Processor: FX57 Single Core

Memory: 2 Gigabytes of OCZ (back in december the memory i ordered was like $200+ went to site i ordered from and can't tell which it was)

Graphics Cards: X1800XT with 512MB Ram and X1800 Crossfire with 512MB Ram

Sound Card: Creative Labs X-Fi Fatality

Floppy Drive: Mitsumi Floppy 7 - in - 1 USB Card Reader/Smart Media Internal Drive

    DVD R/W: Lite-On SHW-160P6S-05 16x8x8x/16x6x4/16x/+48 DVD/CD-RW Combo Black

Powersupply: Silverstone SLI ATX 2.01/EPS 650W Power Supply

Hard Drives: I have a Western Digital 74 GB 10k RPM for the OS and a 400 GB for my misc. junk. Both are SATA drives.

    Monitor: Viewsonic VX924

Keyboard: MS Natural Elite Pro i believe

    Mouse: Logitech G7 Wireless

I can see the hard drives for selection during the set up to chose which drive to install 5308 on and which drives to format.  It also recognized that i had a previous Windows installation on this drive as well (XP Pro 32bit).

Yen, I know that you have solved your particular problem, but I'm adding a post to help others who are having the same problem.

I was getting the same "Starting Installation" problem.  I was planning on doing a dual-boot with a fresh XP install on a (sorta) older system with 256 MB RAM.  It didn't give me an error message or anything, just kept going back to the same installation screen.

Just a little later I tried doing an upgrade to Vista from the already-installed Windows XP installation and it told me that 256 Meg was the minimum and I only had 248 MB.  Yikes!  Turns out that the 256 MB stick of memory was being shared by the on-board video controller on the motherboard.  I added another stick and and then tried a fresh installation from booting the DVD-ROM.  Finally, I was able to get past the stubborn  "Starting Installation" loop.

It does have wireless...Anyway, I've gone past that error now. What happened was when i formatted the HDD with Windows PE, it somehow created a pseudo HDD with almost 1TB of space! ! ! So when i start the Vista installation it keeps trying to copy the installation files to that space, causing it to get stuck. Problem solved using a XP bootable setup disk to format the HDD properly....
