I upgraded my development PC to 64bit Windows XP Prof in Athlon 64. I need to use MS Virtual PC 2004 for testing app in other platform. However, the Virtual PC 2004 cannot be installed in 64bit windows. Is there any method to solve the problem
Thanks a lot.

Run 32bit App in 64bit Windows

Hello Ken,
i did so before, thank you very much for the link (and your effort) anyway.
Microsoft did deliver Virtual Server R2 Standard Edition some time ago with the quarterly updates, this was what i did talk about (without recognizing at first the "Standard/Enterprise" differences).
The Enterprise Edition from download site is able to install as there is a 64bit exe provided, but i (and others) won't have got a key therefore and what is more is that i saw that it needs IIS for running, that is not practible on workin machines.
So at the moment i don't see other way than kicking Virtual PC/Server and go purchasing VMware (as this is able to run on 64bit without probs) the only thing is that you are not able to set up virtual 64bit machines as long as only the itanium processor is fully supported (but they work on it i think).
For 32bit guest systems VMware Workstation is doin great with me!
Best regards

Wow, you Are right Ken, the Enterprise Edition is free. I don't see why they ship a Standard Edition with Licence-Key then to Pack-Subscribers then.
But i did read some more about Virtual PC and Virtual Server, and to me this all is not really logical. For example VS is supporting only one desktop system (XP Pro 32bit), but no sound cards and no other USB devices then standard input devices (mice and keyboards) and for example only one CD drive ...
On the other hand VPC does not support 64bit host systems and of course (as VS too) no other (till today) platforms like Unix, Linux and so on. Too it can't run server systems at all as VS can't run desktop systems except Xp pro 32bit.
And now sit down and believe, i just checked the VMware site and VMware Server is as beta3 available for free too, and it is able to run servers AND desktops (Windows and Linux, etc.) and too does support 64bit guest operating systems on most processors by now. *astonished*
I'll try and see...

To write a managed program written in c++, c# or vb.net program that take advantage of the 64bit stuff you need to use VS 2005. You can write unmanaged applications in c++ in VS 2003.

To my situation, it seems I can run the program in 64bit windows, which is built under VS2003, how to check if the 64 bit windows already had the Virtual server r2 installed
if I want to take the advantage of 64 bit windows, do I have to build the code by VS2005 for example, more memory and better performance
Thank you very much!

Hello,
me is experiencing the same problem, and virtual server r2 is NOT able to install on 64 bit systems. When i try to install a popup message appears that tells "setup did recognize a 64bit system running. virtual server needs a 32bit platform."!
