need help with net framework 1.1 and 2.0

when i go to windows update it tells me that optional downloads are .net framework 1.1 and .net framework 2.0.  When i install 2.0 and go back to windows update to see if there anymore downloads, it tells me that 1.1 is available.  Why is this.  if i have 2.0 then why is 1.1 available to download.  wouldn't that be downgrading.  also do i really need framework.  im just a regular home user that surfs the internet and plays first person shooters.  any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

There are various applications built using the .NET Framework that target a home user as well. You say that you are a first person shooter - in case you have a ATI based video card then the ATI Catalyst Control Center requires .NET Framework v1.1 to be installed.

Then again, you can always install the Framework on demand when a particular application fails and asks for the .NET Framework.

    Hi,

The .NET Framework is not really like DirectX where you install the latest version and you would need to uninstall all previous versions. The version v2.0 of the Framework has some breaking changes from v1.1 and hence there could be some applications which specifically require v1.1 of the Framework.

well do you have a reason why framework 2.0 and 1.1 are both available for download on windows update.  even when i install 2.0 it still asks me to download 1.1

    Hi,

Running both versions side-by-side is well supported. You can install both of them.
