Can anyone tell me approximately how long after the release of Visual Studio 2005 will the .NET Framework 2.0 distributable appear as a standard download on the Windows Update website
In other words, how long before normal users start seeing it as a Windows Update download
Many thanks,
Ben S.

.NET Framework 2.0 Redistributable - When Will It Appear on Windows Update?

The Visual Studio release is the week of November 7th. You should be able to download the framework shortly thereafter depending on how long it takes to get replicated, etc.

Since all developers will always need to include the .NET redistributable with their applications for at least the next few years (some people NEVER run updates), Microsoft probably won't be in a hurry, particularly since there will likely be a service pack of .NET 2.0 in the future (this is conjecture ... there's always service packs, I'm not "in the know" on this point).
That said, it's a good idea to release the non-beta .NET 2.0 to your clients ASAP. Some may install other software that requires the production .NET 2.0, which could break your app (or prohibit them from installing the other application). Either way, the quicker they're to a stable .NET 2.0, the better.
Hope this helps,

Hi,
Nice points. But this brings me to the question of, why doesn't microsoft just embed the framework in the OS the first place so that .net programs would surely run on windows platforms. Would this be a legal issue I think in the early days Microsoft JVM is included in the win9x OS's. So why not do this on .net framework
I think a good startpoint would be vista. I really hope that the framework is already embedded in it...

I've installed the Beta 2 Framework on several PC's for testing purposes. These PC's are also used for everyday office use and I'm concerned that users will run Windows Update and download the final .NET Framework BEFORE I have had a chance to remove the Beta 2 Framework from them. I assume it is not recommended to have Final AND Beta 2 frameworks on the same PC at once!
Can anyone at Microsoft confirm the date (even approximately) that the .NET Framework 2.0 runtime will be available to Joe Public via Windows Update Thanks.

I think the question was not when it would be possible to download the .NET Framework final release but when the .NET Framework 2.0 would be included as part of Windows Update.
So just to confirm, Will v2.0 Framework it be available as part of Windows Update immediately after the release

Starting with Windows Server 2003 (which came with .NET 1.1), we've been shipping the framework with the OS.
The Windows Vista web page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/about/) indicates that it too will ship with the framework.

Since November 7th is the official ship date, I'd imagine you might see it in that timeframe.
