I am not able to sign in on MSN messenger Please help anyone!

Recently i have been having porbelms with signing in on MSN, i think it is due to me agreeing to download the latest MSN. From this moment i am not able to sign in. I clicked on troubleshoot (80048883) and it showed 'Your gateway appears to be offline' which i dont know what it means. Then i went on on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Connection, to check my connection and it showed 'You are currently NOT connected to .NET Messenger Service.

I am really worried if anyone knows how to slove this problem please can you email back asap.

Thanks alot,

Jenny

If you are getting error code 80048883 and you are using MSN Messenger version 7.5.0322 - the developers have decided this is a bug. You have two options:

    1. Follow the instructions here to patch it; or
    2. The developer have rolled back the latest released version to 7.5.0311, which apparently doesn't have this problem. So you can uninstall 7.5.0322, go to the MSN Download website and download the installer 7.5.0311 and install that.

For the record, I had this problem and either of these solutions will work.

I have the same problem as Jenny 777 and the help files didn't help.

I am connecting 2 computers to cable DSL through a wireless router: the one using the wireless connection has no problem at all, but the one hardwired to the router gets the same "gateway offline" error message for both Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger 7.5, even though it has Internet access with no problem (MSN, Hotmail, etc.). I have tried disabling the firewall, granting firewall exception for both Messenger programs, checking the IP addresses, dumping the DNS cache, ... nothing seems to help.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had the "connection time out" error represented by a string of number in the lower left corner when messenger told me that it could not connect and I could not sign on to hotmail, even I can go online. This has happened since I changed my cable modem to DSL modem and with an USR wireless router. Both wired and wireless computers could not log on.

Instead of doing what was told to set up the DSL modem into bridge mode and PPPoE in the router. I tried putting both modem and router into PPPoE with appropriate DSL log in information after days of trying and reading manuals and finally got it working. I don't know why but I am just lucky to get it to work.

    Hello!

If you cannot login to MSN check your system date and time. If you sure correct your system date and time try login.

The only thing I have found to work is that if you re running WXP SP2 then for some odd reason I can only retrieve my hotmail emails on Outlook Express and log into MSN Messenger is to keep all hotmail, msn, passport, and microsoft cookies and log into passport---then all of a sudden my MSN Mesenger and Outlook Express kick in after I have logged into my hotmail email on the passport site . . . Go figure. And sometimes even then, the passport site gives me problems and make me reset a new password. . . I don't know why, try it. Just a suggestion that I've been encompasing. I also input microsoft.com, msn.com, passport.com, passport.login.com and hotmail.com URL's in my Internet Options/Security/Trusted Sites---looks like the SP2's security is a little too sensitive. Let me know if anyone else hs a suggestion

I had a similar problem. The solution was to change the IP address of the router. By default modems and routers both come with the same IP (192.168.1.1) I simply changed the routers address to 192.168.2.1

    Problem solved

I get the "your gateway appears to be offline" message too, but my error code is 80048869 instead of 80048820.
MSN works in the other user accounts on the computer.  It just stopped working in my account.

Now it works. I think the problem was IE was set to "work offline." However, I was using it before and it was fine, but the second time I opened IE it said this.

hes right about that , i forgot to change my date and it would not do it automatically , so i did and was able to use msn right away , weird since date should not have anything to do with msn but i guess since it tracks the time of messages received and all that it probably has to check for the right date , pretty techy feature.

    thanks dude for that tip

Excellent. Thanks! I dont use IE but when I started it, it said Connect or work offline, when I said Connect - messenger started to work.
