And the winner is...

Within a few weeks, the winner of the Worlds best app contest will be anounced, so I think it's an interesting question to ask: Who (or which app) will win

My guess:

In the Games section I think somebody from the netherlands will win... There are a few good games (actualy a lot of good games, but these are the best in my opinion):
-Hangman (very basic and simple, doesn't require a fast pc, everybody knows how to play it
-Tankwars (the one with the most launches, I like it, but it get's kind of boring after a few times... But it's still a good 2 player game!
-Pool (nice graphics, very smart use of MSN Earth!, a really good game)
-MessengerQuest (my favorite game, I played it a lot (look at the highscores :P), it's too bad it was submitted so late, because it could have been a larger and more popular game)

As you may have noticed, there are 2 games of Juzzi and 2 games of TheBlasphemer in the list... I think Pool will win the contest, because it uses MSN Earth. The rest of the apps will score about the same points...

In the Non-Games section, it is very difficult to say, but I think the best ones are:

-Codetalk (a very good and usefull idea, the only thing is, I dont like the way it has been build... could have been better I think, but it is still a nice app, which uses MSN search so is a potential winner!)
-Math Pastebin (ok my own app, and actually I don't think I'll win, but well, I like my own idea and I use it a lot... The problem is I don't use MSN services...)

I personally don't really like the other ones (I mean the concepts, not really the apps itself) so my guess would be Codetalk, although I dont really like it...

    Any updates on this

It's been a looooong January indeed!!! I am so curious about the final results, I can hardly wait!!!!

I think all the contestants should pat theirselves in the back for participating in this contest. After all, it is quite a feat to design and code a game or application (using a just released API) and public it in the world wide web in such a short notice. That explains why there are only 59 application in total, even though the contest was made public at an international level in the msdn main web page.

I've tested some of the other contestant's applications, and so far my favourite is "Messenger Quest", followed closely by "Rockhopper's Race for Fish". I'm really looking forward to check "Othello!". I wanted to play "Snake2", but I got an error. I'll try again later on this week.

Well I really appreciate you saying that CodeTalk might win, even though you dont like it! hehehe, but before you judge how it is built you should look at the code itself. It is actually using a single pass state machine to parse and format the code. And if you check out this article http://www.codeproject.com/jscript/MSNMessengerActivity.asp you will see some of the other techniques I used to accomplish things like synchonorized views and mouse movements as well as simulated asynchronous web method calls.

If you dont like the layout or something then...

    1) Remember I had to make it work in 800x600 all the way up to what I use 1280x1024 resolution and still give plenty of room to see the code.

    2) Give me some feed back about what you would like to see done better because I am going to be fleshing CodeTalk out quite a bit and using it from a new site for developers I am going to be putting up.

    3) Let me know about any other features you would like to see in it...

It is indeed hard to wait, but we have to wait another week I guess... Last date I heard was Januari 30th. But I'm not sure about that...

Nice to see you mentioned two of my games. TankWars doesn't work here, MessengerQuest is a nice game of course, but you're right about the launches.... Let's see what the judges think ;)

Gerald (& J-t), you're going quite off-topic by discussing that codetalk thing, maybe you can open a separate thread

According to a message they posted the winners were being notified today. So I guess those of us that didnt get any contact from them are in the "Sorry, Try Again" category.

According to contest rules the judging criteria is the following:
    Gaming entries:

    Creativity (20%)
Suitability of Activity API Application to Two (2) Users (30%)
Best Use of Other MSN Services* (30%)
Launch "Voting" Volume During Contest Term (20%)

    Non-Gaming entries:
    Creativity (30%)
Suitability of Activity API Application to Two (2) Users (20%)
Best Use of Other MSN Services (30%)
Launch "Voting" Volume During Contest Term (20%)
Maybe there are good games or apps that don't fit well  into this categories. I guess the best games or apps will have high score in some of the categories, but I think it's too difficult to have everything. Lots of good games where submitted too late to get a high number of votes, only a few used MSN Services and I think creativity points should be given to really new game ideas, not just adapting a board game to Messenger. Maybe suitability to 2 players is easier.

We'll see what the judges think of the games. I'm really lookig forward to seeing the final result of the contest.

Yes you are correct...completely off topic... if you want to reply please just email me ..ggibson1@hotmail.com

    Thanks.

Hmm. But Scott did say "We should announce the winners by Friday of this week." So I think they will post a list either on the main web-site or on this forum.

  • RonnieS

Thanks for the feedback. When you say "No highlight" do you mean to not format the code with colors As in just let it go in as regular text If so then that is a pretty good idea. And having the input go in a different popup dialog isnt too bad either.

  • Sydelis

Ok I didn't mean the code, but more the layout indeed. For example:

I see a list of languages, but I can only choose C# or VB.NET. It took me a while to discover that...

I cannot choose for "No highlight". In some cases it is really annoying to have the wrong language highlight.

I don't really like the input... Would have been better (in my opinion) to make a new screen where you can paste your code, give it a title and choose the highlight language...

In short: I would have chosen a total different set-up (don't exactly know how to call it). But you did it like you thought it is the best.

But I still like it, so take this as positive critisism because you really have done a nice job with it!

Only this was a bit off topic, any other guesses about winners

  • dgrigsby

We had been trying to announce the winners today, Feb 2nd. However, judging took longer than expected as we got so many apps, and had such fun playing with all of them.

We should announce the winners by Friday of this week.
