I've got to admit that I'm missing seeing my contact's display pictures
in the main contact list. I know you can see if them using the 'hover
over a contact' expando-view, but by the time that I'm hovering over
the person's name I don't generally need to see the picture any more.
Also the sticking out tabs bar was annoying me so much and getting in
the way so much that I disabled the tabs, if its a choice between
getting the Alerts (only thing I use the tabs for) and having that
hideous bar, I can give up the alerts. Might be handy if there was some
other way in the UI to browse your alerts, then I think most people
could happily lose the tab bar.
However sharing folders seems good, and being able to send messages
whilst Appearing Offline definitely has its uses (even if it does feel
a bit anti-social using that function).
I got invited to test it out, but i don;t know anyone that has the V8 Beta...
the eyecandy is defenetly a plus on this version. One thing I'm sort of unhappy with, if you click on your avatar image, it displays your contact card. IMO I would have left it as a button to change images.
other than that, the beta version works ok. no crashes or anything quirky.

Um, not sure what version of Messenger you've been using, but I've
still got 7.0 on my Win2K box, and it shows your contact card when you
click your avatar image on that version, and I'm sure I remember it
doing the same thing on 7.5 before I upgraded to v8.
You get the option to change your display picture by clicking on your display name in 7.0, 7.5 and 8 beta.
It is a little to much candy for me, i like a more basic Messanger. Hiding the tabs and disable the nasty mouse hover in you contact list makes it much better.
MSN Messager 8 has a lot futures it don't use, but it works fine. I love the Shared Folder future, it is great to share files and they stay shared. So you normally send a file to a contact and the connection fails you must resend it again and again. Now i put a file in the shared folder and my contact can download and re-download it a many times he wants.
Only the Alert service is not working well, i receive all Alerts but when i open a Alert url the Messager craches most of the time. But i think this will be solved in the public sable release.
I agree with PJ on just about everything. I could do without the shared folder feature because AIM already has that.
There are only two reasons I use MSN messenger and neither have anything to do with the client. If I had it my way I would only use AIM since it uses less than half the resources of messenger.
The one thing that is still missing from MSN is the abiltiy to have more than one font color in a single message.
