Why does ActiveSync 4.0 Spontaneously Disconnect?

After upgrading to ActiveSync 4.0, I notice that ActiveSync spontaneously drops the connection after a couple of minutes, even though the device (Audiovox SMT5600) remains connected to the USB. I've reverted to v3.8 and this no longer happens, so this is obviously a v4.0 issue.

Any ideas

Why does ActiveSync 4.0 Spontaneously Disconnect?

It's happening on my ipaq 3835 also, running ActiveSync 4.0.  It often drops the connection after sitting connected for an hour or more.

It also has a hard time recognizing the device correctly sometimes.  Sometimes when I plug in the ipaq, the computer says "unknown device" or "does not recognize USB device."  After I uninstall those using device manager, I can usually get it to recognize it again as an ipaq usb and it will sync.

I don't know if those two problems are related.

the only repro we have found in the lab so far is with mixed language scenarios.  If your device language does not match your desktop language this may be part of the problem.

Actually, I reverted to 3.8 and then reinstalled back up to v4.0. The problem no longer occurs. Also, on the microsoft newsgroups (microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync and microsoft.public.smartphone.developer) this problem has been reported for versions 3.7, 3.8 and 4.0. So it's not specifically a 4.0 issue.

In any case, I'm no longer seeing this symptom, so I can't help any further in diagnosing the issue.

    Thanks for your help!

this has been reported on another device type also.  We are working to get repros in our labs so we can run more diagnostics to track down the issue.

Maybe I should open a new thread, but this looks appropriate.

    Situation:

I had to install Vista Ultimate x64

I installed Visual Studio 2005, SP1. Both in Italian. I could not install the "Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista " because it is available only for English.

To work with my PDA, I installed "Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center Beta 3 for Windows Vista (AMD64)".

I'm able to sync my PDA with my PC.

    The problem:

When I run my VS2005 VB application, it is correctly distributed on my PDA. BUT, as soon as it load the symbols for debugging, the PDA gets disconnected from the "Windows Mobile Device Center" (but NOT from VS 2005!!)

This happens randomly, but about 4 times out of 5. I can debug my application, but since my application is trying to access the PC using sockets, I can establish a connection only sometimes (about 1 time out of 5).

Any idea of what I should do

    Many thanks in advance !
