On my Windows Mobile 2003 Emulator, I can access the internet from the browser but I can not connect to my network. I found an older post that described my exact problem (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=101163&SiteID=1), but the thread did not seem to get resolved.
I am using ActiveSync 4.1.
Any suggestions

Network connectivity problems

Hi Vladimir
I am not working in a corporate environment. My host machine is connected to a workgroup that includes one other laptop, and that's it. I have disabled the windows firewall, and I'm quite sure I have no peculiar IPSec policy because I wouldn't even know how to set it up.
Since my last post I have been able to connect by binding the emulator NE2000 to my hardware card. (For some reason this failed previously). I would still like to connect to \\mymachine\share via ActiveSync. Is this even possible

Can you give us a little more detail, what you are trying to do and what error you are obtaining

OK, so this topic may not be very interesting, but I'm pretty much at wits end.
Is there a list of steps that a person must follow to get their PPC emulator to connect to the host network Does it usually "just work" right out of the box for most folk Is there someone who can even say "it worked fine for me--no problems"
If someone could just humor me here, I'd sure appreciate it...

So the only thing that doesn't work is connecting to \\mymachine\myshare This usually indicates an authorization problem. For example in a corporate environment, this is sometimes caused by a global IPSec policy. The OS the emulator is running doesn't support IPSec and in this case is not allowed to connect to other machines on the network. The workaround for that particular problem is to make sure that \\mymachine is configured as a boundary machine that allows non IPSec connections, but there could be other secury settings shutting a random machine (which the emulator appears to be) from network resources.
Thanks,
Vladimir

The Windows Mobile emulator has difficulty binding to the network adapter of the virtual machine. As you described, you could still browse internet over DMA Activesync.
Microsoft has released a patch for VirtualPC to fix this:
http://blogs.msdn.com/vsdteam/archive/2005/10.aspx
If it is VMWare (like myself) then you are out of luck.
If you are not using a Virtual Machine, I would try running something like ceIPConfig:

and determine exactly what network connectivity you do have.

happy we tod
Am I the only one experiencing this problem I set up my development environment on my laptop and I encounter the same problem....
Does this work out of the box for others Am I just making some stupid configuration mistake

Hi Mohit
I had read that blog post, and I followed it exactly. Still no luck. When I attempt to access the internet (or a locally hosted web page) I am successful.
But, when I try to connect to my host computer (by clicking "Open Path" in file explorer, and entering the name of my host computer) I am told "The network path was not found", and then "Network resources cannot be found or you do not have permission to access the network". (I know the machine name and the network path are legitimate because I am able to access the machine in the same way from other networked computers.)
Are there some additional permissons I need to set up I have tried both enabling and disabling the NE2000 network adapter on the emulator, but it doesn't seem to matter either way.
I am using ActiveSync4.1.
I need this connectivity to be able to use RDA to connect my device's database to the host's.

This is interesting. Usually people have more trouble when using network card emulation (because it requires fully configuring the mobile OS by hand) than when using the ActiveSync which guesses the settings by attempting to copy them from the host machine. I'll forward this thread to an ActiveSync dev, but for now I'd recommend trying to change the setting on the ActiveSync's File->Connection Settings->This computer is connected to: "" dropdown and using an IP address instead of the name of the local machine.
Thanks,
Vladimir

If you are just connecting over Activesync, the IP Address assigned is only between the host computer and the emulator, and you probably want your device on the network itself
If you do have an assigned address, then have you tried using the IP address rather than the actual host name of your machine (i.e. Something like "\\10.0.0.7\share")

p.s. There are some extra network adapater configuration options for the emulator, but they are a bit hidden. In Visual Studio (2005) go to 'Tools'->'Options...'->'Device Tools'->'Devices'.
Then select your emulator, and click on the 'Properties' button.

Hi Andrewssi
My host's address is 192.168.0.1, and under ceipconfig I am given two options: NE2001 (via loopback adapter), and Serial over DMA. On startup, these have ip addresses of 169.254.203.85 and 192.168.55.101 respectively.
I am unable to ping either of these from the host(timeout).
If I click the 'renew' option on ceipconfig (with NE2001 set), it comes back with an ip of 0.0.0.0. It is not possible to 'renew' when set to Serial over DMA.
In the configuration options you refer to I have the NE2001 configured to use a loopback adapter, however it gives me the same result if I set it to "connected network card".
Still stuck...

Andrewssi:
I am not using VPC or VMW, though I installed (but don't use) VPC trial when advised that it contained a "Virtual Switch Driver" that the emulator needs. To no avail.
I installed ceIPConfig, however I don't know enough about networks to really intepret the information I get back. The one thing I tried was to ping (from the host) the IP address ceIPConfig said was assigned to the emulator. There was no response (timeout).
What should I be looking for
