SmartPhone Connectivity through ActiveSync Questions

Ok, I've been having major issues with the emulator and connectivity and finally gave up on it, so I'm working exclusively on the phone now (much better experience!).

My problem is related to connectivity. I can connect just fine with Internet Explorer to both my local machine connected via ActiveSync and the Internet (Hurray!).

Unfortunately, the same is not true for Web Services called from the the device. I can call either a local machine Web Service when connected to the Work Connection or the Internet when connected to the Internet Connection, but never both at the same time. I have a couple of apps that are switching online and offline modes depending on connectivity and I need some reliable mechanism to connect to both the local machine and the Web server.

Is there anyway to make this happen It doesn't look like there's any way to configure ActiveSync to actually tell it what to do with these connections. The phone also doesn't seem to have any options, other than using Automatic for both the Internet or Work. Even after having connected and setting to passthrough I still get this mismatched behavior.

What is the difference between these two and why can't I configure the Work connection to go both local and to the Internet with the Web Service It seems IE can do it, so what is it doing differently

Any hints

    Anand,

Yes I've gone basically through those very steps. But then as mentioned I gave up on the flaky connectivity and slow perf of the emulator. It was just wasting too much time.

I think the issue is that unlike the real phone the emulator is not properly respecting ActiveSync profiles. There are many inconsistencies. It usually works with the phone's IE but it does not work with Web Services. I don't know what the difference is or how to configure ActiveSync or the emulator to have IE and the Web Service Proxy use the same settings, but they are not.

On the phone I can switch between the Work and Internet Profile to connect to the local desktop or the internet respectively. For Web Services only one or the other will work, while IE works with either profile connecting both to the Interent and Desktop.

Using ActiveSync switching the profiles has no effect and connection to the local machine does not seem to work at all with Web Services (again while IE works just fine). Sometimes it does work, and when it does Internet Connectivity doesn't. It's just completely hit or miss.

I give frequent demos and I can't be fumbling everywhere I go to see whether it happens to work this cycle of the moon <g>...

Can you tell me what problems you were having with the Emulator connectivity in the first place. Have you seen the latest instructions on our team blog

Re: performance, we are working on a more robust Device Emulator which will be released as a CTP sometime soon. For your profiles, I am surprised that the SP Emulator is behaving differently for IE and web services. Usually, the General Internet Settings (with the same ISP) for both profiles should work.

I can track the Activesync issue with SP as a bug in our database. Can you give me exact repro steps

Hope you will stay tuned on the perf. improvements with the emuator as well.
