I want to use a custom color palette in Excel, by redefining some of the default colors. I'm trying to choose the colors in the default palette that most closely match the custom colors. Looking at colorindex 11 and 25, 5 and 32, and some others have the same RGB value. Does this mean that they are the same color And can I set my own default RGB value to duplicates with impunity

The color is defined by the RGB values. If two different palette items (two different color index values) have the same RGB, then they are the same color. ColorIndex is merely a shorthand way to access the 56 colors in the Excel palette. You can redefine these however you want.
