visual basic ide+compiler is a mess!

Hi,

i have a solution with with 10+ projects (some in c# most in vb) and every time i try to debug inside a vb project i get about 50 annoying error dialogs telling me vbc is broken and the only way to escape from them is to kill visual studio and restart it. sometimes i get lucky and the ide crashes itself saving me from the pain of the never ending dialogs.

now debugging is a pain and whats the use of the "edit and continue" if i can even debug so i can see what values have my vars.

    Hi Scott --

Thanks for the offer. Yes, another project we can bring in house would be *very* useful. We've been churning on a particular project for a number of weeks but are finding the bug to be incredibly hard to reproduce.

Once we locate the root cause, we will fix it and get a fix out to you all as soon as possible. However, it's a bit premature to discuss how we will actually release a fix for this issue.

If you have a project that would reproduce the project easily (particularly if it is a small project that repros the issue consistently) then please contact me via email.

    Thanks!

Just a quick note that disabling edit & continue until MS can release a patch fixed it for me.

    Hello Caroco --

We're currently investigating this issue based on a few customer reports captured in the MSDN Feedback center bug at:
    http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/ProductFeedback/viewFeedback.aspx feedbackid=625dddda-d999-4fca-aa3b-68f430d47a7e

We're furiously hunting down the root cause. New information will be posted to that bug as we find it.

Are you able to consistently reproduce the error yet

If not, I have a project that can do so almost on demand. I would need to get management approval to send it across. If doing so leads to a resolution of this issue then I don't see this being a problem.

Once you locate the source of this error are you likely to issue a Hotfix or will we have to wait for a service pack or orcas

While my project doesn't have upgraded 2003 projects, it does reference debug builds of 2003 assemblies. I think the problem lies in the way the IDE background compiler deals with them somehow.

Any update on the status of this would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Scott
