Hi,
I just installed Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition. When I try to create a new Project (File --- New Project --- Windows Application) I get the following error:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntx is incorrect. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007B)
I tried changing the default directories for projects, that didn't work. I rebooted. I tried starting a different type of project, all with the same error.
PLEASE HELP!!!!

When I am at the New Project window where you can select from Windows Application, Class Library, Console application, all it asks me for is a name. When I click OK on this screen, that is when the error pops up. I've tried using the default name as well as making up one, and also tried different types of projects, but it makes no difference.
Should I just uninstall and try again

I assume you got to the New Project dialog since you could change the Project Type. What are you using for these fields on the New Project dialog
Name
Location
Solution Name

Can you try this first
If you cannot figure out what the above temporary path is on your machine, you can do this:
- Use menu Tools | Options
- Select "Project and Solutions" on the tree view.
- Check "Save new projecst when created" on the panel.
After this, when you try to create a new project, the dialog should let you specify the full path. Use a valid path in this case.

My user name was a problem - I have changed this to something simple.
I followed the above advice - checking the "Save new project ... " box
I can now specify a path that exists but I then get the mesage that a project with this name already exists - regardless of what name I give it. A new directory is created with the chosen name but I don't move on to another screen.
Thanks for all your advice everybody!

Neither of those work. If needed, create a separate user account following those guidlines. it will work great then.

I don't think you need to uninstall.
Visual Basic Express by default creates your project in a temporary location and discards that project if you don't want to save it. On my machine (English Windows XP), that location is
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Temporary Projects
My guess is this path on your machine is somehow invalid. Would you please check what the equivalence path for this is

Hope this helps,
