WDS Shutdown Issues

I've seen comments about this problem in other forums, but not here, so I thought I would bring it up...

WDS does not seem to like to shut down gracefully when Windows is shut down. On virtually every shutdown, a "Waiting for WindowsSearchIndexer..." window will appear, and as often as not the progress bar makes it all the way to the end before it shuts down, and the user has to click on the "End Now" button to terminate the process.

The problem occurs both with the most recent released version of WDS Enterprise, and with the 2.6.5.5373 beta.

Needless to say, we consider this issue a show-stopper for enterprise deployment. Is anyone aware of a workaround for this

Jerry

WDS Shutdown Issues

Indeed, I am seeing this problem on all kinds of machines... high-end, low-end... home and work. Clearly something that needs addressing.

    Hi Bill,

I'm currently using WDS 02.06.5000.5378 (the RTM one as you mentioned) and now WDS is completely hanging up, preventing the shutdown process. I have to manually click the "End Now" button to force the shutdown process, which is simply not better than the previous version I used. The previous one was not locking up the shutdown process, but it took a so long time before terminating itself.

AFAIK, this problem always occurs in any previous version of WDS (previously MSN Search Toolbar).

Is there any plan when this problem will be completely fixed

    Thx.

Yes, the WDS shutdown problem affects me, too.

Like others, I am using v2.06.5000.5378 and usually (almost always) have to press the task end button to shutdown - or, shut down processes from task manager.

I'm using WinXP SP2 fully patched, AVG AntiVirus, and the anti-spyware products from Lavasoft: Ad-Watch SE Professional, and Ad-Aware SE Professional Build 1.06r1

What has been most effective for me - and what I believe is causing the hangup in the WDS - is Ad-Watch. If I shut down its process, things start to clear up.

This was also exhibited with previous versions of Windows DTS going back 12 months or more. Bill's explanation makes sense to me. Read on ..

The shutdown problem I see is very severe, even now with Build 5378 of WDS - on some occasions, shutdown or reboot does not even initiate, aven after several tries. I then have to go to task manager, and shut down processes (Ad-Watch, primarily), and then use the Shutdown menu from Windows task manager.

Months ago - perhaps July 2005 - I had suspicions that it was the Indexing Service used by Windows XP for search from the Windows Explorer shell that was conflicting.

Is that likely to be a problem, too

I haven't disabled the Indexing Service at all - maybe I should, since I find now that the WDS extension to the Windows Explorer shell is acceptable (it was a dog, back in July 2005 - and I quickly went back to the childish Search Companion).

Summary - I think Ad-Watch is 90% of my problems. But I haven't contacted lavasoft about this.

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for your explanation. Unfortunately, it seems this WDS shutdown problem is affecting a lot of people, including me. I am using v2.06.5000.5378 and usually have to press the task end button to shutdown. Please take a second look at this problem before RTM.

    Hi Jerry,

Thanks for your partience while this was investigated.

WDS 2.6.5 underwent significant changes to prevent this from occurring. We’ve only seen this now when other applications are thrashing in response to the shutdown message and subsequently inhibiting shutdown by WDS. This dialog results when an app (WDS in this case) fails to respond to the shut down message within five seconds of receipt.

Some changes did occur between the beta release and our expected final release of WDS that may further relieved this, but this dialog’s appearance more often than not an issue with other apps misbehaving on shut down if you are running the V2.06.5000.5378 (likely to be the RTM) release of WDS.

But, on low end machines that are I/O bound there is still a chance of still seeing this delay message, but it’ll clear sooner than with prior releases.

    Hope this is helpful.

I also installed the latest version yesterday, but I still get the same WDS shutdown problems. I have had to click "End Now" on every version I've used (since February) when shutting down my home computer, which is relatively powerful (P4 3.2 GHz (HT), 2GB RAM, 2x200GB HDs in RAID 0). Oddly enough, on my less powerful computer at work (P4 3GHz (not HT) 512MB RAM, 80GB HD), it is not a problem at all.

    Cheers,
    Dr. Jazz
