Installation Problems with your product

ok, so i decided to install your desktop search (WDS) thing. all good, it installs. think it is MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search.

so, i go for coffee and i feel brave and decide to install you latest beta. this is Windows Desktop Search 2.6.5 beta (KB911993)

and guess what.........

It un installs MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search and the tries to install the beta and fails with error about Update.inf file. Full error message is:

Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.

And now I ask you: ""Do you know what is wrong - Should I bother and say "WTF" or should I just install Google Desktop Search - - ""'

btw, my Computer is being instructed to operate by Windows 2000 SP4.

    Hi again,

At this time it does not look like there is any problem with our installer, but rather with your computer's configuration.

Are you able to install other Windows Updates Such as the most recent security updates

I have a feeling that you'll have the same trouble installing any other Windows components or updates that use the Package Installer.

At this time we haven't had any other reports of users unable to install on Windows 2000. If you've tried the steps suggested above and they don't help, you may need to contact your PC manufacturer or Windows support to determine what the real problem is and how to fix it.

I'm sorry that the links we provided didn't help you. However, at this time I would recommend that you contact the system administrator at your company to help correct the problem with your machine.

    Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear about the problem you're having installing our new Beta version.

Could you go to Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ) and look under "Recommended Updates" and tell me if it lists an update for "Update Root Certificates" or something like that

If so, does installing that update fix your problem

Installing this update should not be necessary to install WDS, however - if it works after following these steps, it would help us a lot in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks for your time, and sorry for the inconvenience this issue has caused you.

    Brandon

    Update:

We've been unable to reproduce this problem here.

If the suggestion in my last post doesn't help you, you might also try the solution described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx scid=kb;en-us;813442

Please let us know if either of these solutions helps!

The MSN Toolbar uses an MSI-based installer.

The WDS standalone installer is based on the Windows Package Installer, which relies on Cryptographic Services to verify the digital signature on the package files to make sure the installer has not been tampered with.

This installer package is supported on Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.

If there is a problem with your system configuration, and the cryptographic service is unavailable, the installer will be unable to verify the contents of the package and will display the error you're seeing.

    Hi Updates,

Sorry to hear that you're still having a problem - which has clearly been difficult to resolve at our end. It's understandable that you don't feel that part or all of the problem may have to do with your system's configuration however, to rule that possibility out entirely, would you please check with your system admininstrator to make sure

    Thanks in advance,

system admininstrator validated that machine () works and smiles. system admininstrator comply to machine center standards set by bereu.

system admininstrator tells to you "like cryptographic service is running. (not running away, but maybe later. service is not sweating, ok )."

eh, i ask your system admininstrator

your system admininstrator to check your software. my system admininstrator feels your system admininstrator made bad software....

eh, now you tell me......ok make your software work and send me html link (in blue). ok your software makes me ...can you make it

    hola,

the guys that update my bank balance every month contracted with MS (that is you) and is using SUS for updates for your drill sergent operator Win2000.

the guys that update my bank balance every month is a very large company, and relies on SUS for updates. now, you tell me, how my computer is all of the sudden sick and does not want to consume updates. it consumes all updates.

the issue here is not with my computer.

the issue here is not with my computer updates!

the issue is that the WDS beta product does not work. Why can Billie Gates not instruct his people to:

    i) write software that work

ii) make user friendly error messages so

      1. User can understand it
      2. MS technical propeller can understand it
      3. MS support slave can understand it
      4. Billie Richman can understand it.

I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer in my last post. Method 4 of the KB article explains how to repair Cryptographic Services. The method contains instructions for both XP and 2000, so please follow the instructions carefully.

    Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx scid=kb;en-us;822798#XSLTH3145121123120121120120

    adios,

as mentioned before my computer takes operating instructions from your Windows 2000. your support note states:

Note Windows 2000 does not list Cryptographic Services in the SERVICES Administrative Utility.

so....how do i tell your operator Win2000 to enable this Cryptographic Services. why all these complex issues and very technical resolutions why does your beta not install correct the first time we (poor users) do not have the brains or time to analyse your bugs / worms .

    what about another option :

please send us users a html link (in blue) that points to software that work .
