Is it possible to move the index from one machine to another I'm sure it's not supported, but will it work Would you have to move the registry area for WDS also
Here's the background: We have a situation where we've indexed 300,000 files on a removable drive. We now need to move the index to a different machine, with the removable drive. It was only set to index the removable drive and no local files. If we move the index folders and the registry area to the new machine, will this work
Thanks,
John

It's definitely not supported, and I really would recommend against it.
Indexing 300,000 items shouldn't take all that long though. Even the slowest machine should be able to do it overnight.
If you're planning to move the drive frequently, that's unfortunately not a scenario that we're designed to handle at this time.

If you are only moving the drive between a couple of machines, we did include one small feature to help out with that.
If you index the drive on one system, then disconnect the drive, the indexer will not purge the indexed information about that drive so long as you have a rule set up for it in the Options dialog.
You will still get results for that drive even when it isn't connected. As soon as you hook it back up, the indexer will crawl it for changes.
So if you have a drive full of music or something that you switch between 2 computers, or a laptop that is connected to a removeable drive only when docked... those situations should work pretty well.
We hope to improve the versatility of our product in future releases and knowing what scenarios are important to our users is very helpful :)
