Hi,
I would like to know whether I can limit my search to a specific partition (drive) or folder, say I want to search a file named myresume in E drive. or say I want to again narrow my search to the folder resumes in E drive for the file myresume.
Thanks for any help

Searching a specific drive or folder
MySpike
There u go...the "\" made all the difference. Now when I search path:E:\ resume, i'm getting the results only from E drive...which was exactly what I'm looking for...thanks a lot..
I'm using the latest beta..and sure i index all my drives except c drive...as in C drive i got only programs and system files..my temp, temporary internet files and my docs all lie outside C drive..
One thing that made me confused was I could somehow get these same results (drive specific) in the previous beta, but was unable to do it now..and i really forgot how I managed that a month before..had spent hours trying to recollect what i had done earlier..
One thing I would like MS to do is to make the instructions (especially the advanced syntax) more simpler..its a lill difficult for the average joe...and with todays huge hard drives and endless partitions, drive / folder specific searches will gain more importance...
Anyway..keep up the good work..and once again thanks....

Hmm.. maybe we need to be more specific...
Try something like this..
path:d:\ folder:My Stuff contains:Jeff
Also What version of WDS are you running It really shouldn't matter as this syntax was included a while back but never hurts to ask.
Also, I'm sure you are doing this but have to ask... Are you indexing the drive/folder you are trying to search It's always the little things that get ya...
Let me know if this works for you...
Thanks,
Jeff

I am setting the following:
path:My Documents folder:NavBackup
and get returned all of the files in the NavBackup folder (which is in My Documents), and its subdirectories as I would expect. However, this procedure doesn't work for all folders in My Documents. When I query with:
path:My Documents folder:c#
a list of files from locations other than My Documents\c# are also returned. The same happens with:
path:My Documents folder:My Pictures.
Again files (all of them images of some kind) located outside of My Pictures are returned in the results.
What am I doing wrong :) What is the correct syntax for a search within a specified directory in My Documents
Nicolo Carandini
Nope...either its a bug in WDS..cuz I had gone thru the advanced syntax and even searched internet for an answer.
For ex, I searched for Path:E "Resume", I'm getting results from all the drives (I've drives from C to M). I tried without the quotes too..If someone want a screenshot I'm happy to provide.
Some results I got I'm putting here (I'm mentioning only folders..that the files given in results for the above search resides)
1.M:\EBOOKS
2. J:\EBOOKS
2. J:\ALL ABOUT..
and so on....The thing I observed here is the results for E drive is shown as E\DATA or E\PERSONAL (NOTE the absence of ":") while for other drives it is as above..So obviously this syntax is not working for me...

In the Help section of WDS if you look for the advanced query syntax you will find the following (and a lot more).
To restrict by file store (back to top)
If you use several e-mail accounts and you want to limit a query to either Microsoft Office Outlook or Outlook Express, you can use the store: indicator.
Properties for file type: All (back to top)
So for example you could use Path:C Folder:MyStuff Ext:.bmp "My Pictures"
This should give you all pictures .bmps in the MyStuff folder on the C drive that have "My Pictures" as part of the name.

I'm glad that worked!
With the larger drives and even network drives things can be harder to search for. It wouldn't suprise me if this information isn't updated with the next release, but it's always good to post things you'd like to see changed!! It doesn't always mean it will happen but with Bill and others frequenting this forum, at least someone will see the suggestions.
Take care!
Jeff
