Outlook 2000 crashes on exit with WDS installed

I ran into 2 problems with WDS version 2.06.0000.2083.

I have just installed WDS for the first time on XP SP2. I don't have MSN Search Toolbar installed. My Outlook setup doesn't use Exchange and just connects to my ISP to retrieve email. The problem I have is that Outlook crashes on exit. I can post memory dump if necessary.

Additionally, if I let WDS finish indexing while Outlook is up, WDS doesn't ever find anything in the email messages. Kind of defeats the purpose of Outlook integration.

Are these known issues that I ran into If so, when should we expect to have a new version out that addresses Outlook 2000 integration Thanks.

I assume you have all the available Office service packs and updates installed

    Hi Sergey,

Sorry we weren't able to recreate this. Is there anything else we can do at our end

    Thanks,

Tried Custom folders for emial. It correctly displayed all email folders I have setup. I keep very few email messages in my Inbox. The ones I decide to keep are moved into various sub-folders (they are not under Inbox though).

I just tried it again. I had 2 new messages arrive to Inbox. Index Status window showed 2 items left to scan. Used Index Now button and after it had finished scanning, I tried to search again. Got nothing. My .pst file is about 95Mb if that makes any difference.

Tried disabling all add-ins. Removed them, restarted Outlook and verified they were no longer loaded. Tried closing Outlook and got the same crash. I have VS.NET 2003 installed and here's what it had reported:

    1 - Unhandled exception at 0x3ff54578 in OUTLOOK.EXE: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x3ff54578.

    2 - Unhandled exception at 0x7c901010 in OUTLOOK.EXE: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x0102ff90.

First report is with no 3rd party add-ins loaded and the 2nd one with all (2) add-ins loaded.

I have have very similar problems, and they apparently still are unsolved with Outlook XP. It looks a bit as though any program that accesses Outlook will interfere with the shutdown of Outlook. Another example of a Program that does this is Microsoft ActiveSynch: any time I have my PocketPC connected, I can no longer shut down Outlook (OK, you will not see Outlook, but it's still there in the task list). If I force the system to shut down, Outlook breaks. I finally worked around this by removing the PocketPC before closing Outlook. Since MDS also "latches" onto Outlook like this (and because there is no PocketPC to remove in this case), Outlook does not get a chance to close without errors.

The problem gets worse with any additional program accessing Outlook data. I actually noticed a complete lock situation when I had a widget running which displays Outlook to-do elements. The attempt to shut down (or hibernate) the system will cause a message popping up that reports some obscure error not clearly related to Outlook, MDS, ActiveSynch or the widget or anything else. When you "OK" the message, it occurs again and again, so the system never shuts down. I have narrowed it down to the MDS/Outlook combination eventually. If you stop indexing and then close MDS, you are able to shut down Outlook (most of the time). If that does not work, shut down the widget and then shut down Outlook. Any alternative, like trying to kill the Outlook task, does not work because it will simply be restarted (probably by MDS) and you get that obnoxious message again.

I had at least one situation where I had to kill the entire task tree that encompasses the Outlook task. Unfortunately, that really kills the system as well. In doing so, it ruined my MDS data/index. Ain't it nice that the only remedy to that is doing a re-install of MDS and reindexing

    Does anyone have similar experiences

It sounds like there's a problem with your Outlook installation that is preventing it from closing properly, possibly when an add-in is running. However, we took great care in WDS to prevent such problems from occuring on our end.

WDS will never, ever start Outlook on its own, nor will it restart it if you close it. However, ActiveSync is known to do that on occasion.

I've just submitted my article. So, I don't know there is much we can do at this point. I'll make sure to give it another try when new non-beta WDS version is out. Thanks for asking though.

If you go into Desktop Search Options and select "Custom folder and email locations," then click "Browse..." - can you verify that your Outlook folders show up in that dialog and are selected

Also, do you store e-mail in the root of a PST file (ie. not in an "Inbox" or other subfolder) We have a known issue in the current release where items in the root of a PST will not be indexed. This is fixed in our next scheduled release.

Have you tried disabling either of your other add-ins to see if the crash goes away It's possible there is some conflict between WDS and another add-in. If you could verify that this is or is not the case, it might help us track down the issue.

I'm not aware of any crashing issues related to Outlook 2000. Do you have any other Outlook add-ins installed Does it crash every time or only on occassion

Regarding your second question... If you index e-mail, you don't see any results at all Or you are missing some results What if you select the "Email" filter and do a query for *

Do you get any results then

Our next release does fix a couple of known issues specific to Outlook 2000. However without more information I can't say for certain whether they are the same issues you're seeing.

    Hi again Sergey,

Unfortunately we haven't been able to reproduce your problem here, which makes it much more difficult to track down. As I said, our next release (which should be out very soon) does address some issues specific to Outlook 2000.

  • Jordanspringer

Yep, crashes every time. I have Chilton Preview add-in v1.08 (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Peaks/8392/) and Norton Antivirus v8.01 with Outlook integration installed. Uninstalling WDS fixes the crash btw.

My *wild* guess is that both problems perhaps are related. I don't think any email messages get indexed, hence no results at all. Here's how I came to this no results conclusion. I left Outlook running, brought up WDS index window and forced it to index everything. When it was done, I went ahead and searched All for some common word that I know should be in lots of emails. Result window had shown nothing.

I'm actually working on an article for MSDN that has to do with WDS. It's a bummer I can't get it to work with Outlook.

    Bill,

No, unfortunately the problem is still unresolved. As I had mentioned earlier, I'm working on an article for MSDN Magazine, which partially has to do with WDS. It's a shame I wasn't able to get more help on this problem.

    Thanks.

  • Mike_Pike

I am having exactly the same issue and found your post while looking for a solution. I will uninstall WDS and wait for this to be fixed. It wasn't functionality I wanted. It just kept asking me to upgrade and I figured what could it hurt.
  • Muralee

Absolutely. I've reloaded Windows XP about 3 weeks ago and made sure everything, including Office, was up to date.

Come to think of it, I tried previous WDS version right before Christmas and before I reloaded OS against the same Outlook 2000 and .pst file with basically the same result.

Also check this Channel 9 Desktop Search Bug Reports section. There is a section there called "Outlook crashes upon exiting", which is what I ran into as well:
    http://channel9.msdn.com/wiki/default.aspx/Channel9.DesktopSearchBugReports

Please don't hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do to help you isolate the issue(s). I'm still hoping to get this resolved/workedaround in time for the article completion.
