WDS and Outlook 2000 crashing on exit issue - open for discussion?

I read through the previous thread and really didn't get the sense that this issue is being addressed or acknowledged. So, here's my own experience on it:

It seems even with the new build of WDS (03/08/06), I too still have the Outlook 2000 crashing on exit problem. I'm running Win2K SP4, Office 2000 SP3 and all updates from Microsoft Update for both the OS and Office. The Pc is a 1.5Ghz P4, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, etc. The hardware is more than sufficient.

I recent formatted my hard drive and reinstalled clean the OS, Office, all updates, and WDS. I have not restored my backup of my PST for Outlook; I have left it as a new install. Therefore, I have just the barebones in way of applications loaded - no firewalls, AV, etc.

I have also turned off the native Indexing Service in Win2K and told WDS to NOT index email attachments to no avail. I even went as far as letting WDS index fully with Outlook open. Regardless, I still get the crash. If I uninstall WDS, Outlook exits cleanly, with no error messages.

    Hi JRH77,

    I found this at:
    http://search.msn.com/docs/toolbar.aspx t=MSNTbar_TROU_CANTFINDANYEMAIL.htm

I'm wondering if being in the Internet Only mode (which many home users are) may cause certain files to not close properly and this may be causing Outlook to hang or close improperly. Once again this is purely speculation and am not an expert but thought it may be worth a shot.

    I hope this helps!

Just a shot in the dark here but are you working in Corporate & Workgroup mode or Personal Try changing to Corporate & Work group of you are not currently doing so and see if that makes a difference.

Let me know if this helps.

I should have clarified my "question". I understood the info in the link, but what I meant was that anyone who installs the stand-alone WDS client would have to know to change that setting right from the off. Maybe its just me, but one would think the WDS install wizard would suggest to users the change might be necessary or give an option to have the installer do it automatically with a "more info" link pointing to that webpage.

As I had eluded to before, the vast majority of people who install the standalone WDS client aren't going to know enough to make that setting change, but at least for now, they can reference this forum. Hopefully a more user-friendly way of avoiding this problem will be implemented in future WDS releases.

I completely agree. Now that we know the cause, I plan to bring this up for our next release (not 2.6.5 which it's much too late for, but the one after that).

Thanks, and I'm glad this problem was resolved for you =)

After I tried your suggestion, I was so tickled pink at the results, that I immediately flagged it as "the answer" and voted it "helpful."

I went to your post from a link in an alert email and when I clicked on the main forum (*after* posting) I saw it was answered. My first thought was "Wow that was fast!"

As for WDS installer checking the version of Outlook, that would be a good idea. I beleive (would have to double check) that this is listed in the system requirements but I agree a lot of people don't necessarily take the time to read those things, especially if a friend sends them a link to something cool.

Once again, glad you are up and running! (It's always the little things isn't it...)

    Have a great weekend!

    Hi Sergey!

As for the PST file, you can close Outlook, copy it to another share to back it up before changing versions for safety's sake. However as it is a valid store file in both versions and the conversion changes the structure that touches it, but doenst make any changes to the file itself, you should be fine. I used to do it almost weekly on my old system so I could use a Fax add-in to send and receive faxes, which only worked in Internet Mail Only mode. Never had a problem.

Better safe then sorry though. :)

If you do try that, please let me know if it fixed things for you!

Thanks & have a great weekend!

    Jeff,

I do have Outlook 2000 setup in 'Internet Mail Only' as well. I haven't tried your suggestion mainly because I'm concerned about what that's gonna do to my existing 100Mb PST file. Any ideas I get a feeling though that if I were to change that setting, WDS's gonna work for me too.

Worst case scenario, I could copy my PST onto a virtual machine, install Outlook and WDS on it and give it a shot. It'll take me a while to get to that as my WDS article is complete.

    Thanks.

    Jeff,

Last night I totally forgot to test your theory. So, today I tried it and yes, that setting was the cause! As soon as I changed it over to "Corporate or Workgroup" and let Outlook restart/reconfigure itself, now it exits cleanly and flawlessly with no errors!

That was something I would never even have related as being part of the problem! Thanks for the tip!

Now, this begs the question: "Why should this setting have to be changed " I mean, I used the "home user" WDS suite (toolbar, form fill, popup blocker, etc) and still got this error. I consider myself an intermediate-advanced user, so if I didn’t think to check this, anyone below my level of knowledge surely wouldn’t!

Oh, I also want to thank Sergey for his original thread. I scoured the’ Net for answers and his thread was the only one that led me to the conclusion this issue wasn’t “machine-specific”; saving my sanity in the process.

The answer to 'Why' this was needed was included in the link I gave you, Outlook Internet Mail Only was designed using only a partial implementation of the MAPI DLLs where the Corproate or Workgroup version installs the complete versions.

WDS uses MAPI to understnad how to access and index your mail store. Consequently a partial install of these files doesn't seem to do the job.

I am So glad that worked for you!! <Woo Hoo!> Now anyone who searches this thread will (hopefully) find the answer they need. I hope Sergey is still lurking in this forum!

That reminds me, if you wanted to mark this thread as answered it would let others know that there's a fix at the end of the thread..

Thanks for haning in there and not giving up!

    Best regards!

    Jeff

Bit of a shot in the dark, but is worth checking that your PST file is ok.

I've developed Outlook COM Add-In's that fail to shut down if there are any errors in the file closure and the MSN WDS Toolbar might be susceptible to that too.

Office 2000 PST Repair is here, I think:

    Hi Jeff,

I'm actually a home user, so I'm not sure what you mean by "working in Corporate & Workgroup mode or Personal" .  I wanted the WDS client without having to customize the install of the full suite and have less options to configure when using WDS.

Although, for kicks, I did install the full WDS suite and that too produced the exit error with Outlook 2000. Once I determined that it wasn't one particular client causing the issue, I reinstalled the basic WDS.

Considering widespread nature of this problem and the fact they were unable to reproduce it, I would've expected them to come back with more follow up questions.

  • Thomo2

We're investigating. I'll let you know as soon as I have more.
