Since being forced to upgrade to what i believe to be 2.6.5 by outlook 07', my search results are no longer tabbed under 'programs' 'documents' etc. Instead it now seems to just list the results under 'everything'.
This problem extends to it listing erroneous results, typing in 'paint' will no longer bring up paint.exe as a result, instead it only shows 2 word documents that have not to do with the word 'paint'.
Any advise would be appreciated.

WDS 2.6.5? problem

Paul,
I wonder if you could confirm something. If you see the file "searchindexer.exe" running do I assume that WDS is running. I thought I told it not to install when I loaded Office 2007 beta. Is there a way to turn the search function off. It is always running and has slowed down my machine.
Thanks

Hello kingofnexus,
When you installed the Outlook 2007 beta it prompted you to install Windows Desktop Search (WDS) version 3.0 beta as well. The results that you are seeing are not surprising. Please let me explain...
The WDS 3.0 beta does not currently include a user interface (it has been intentionally disabled). For the moment, the WDS 3.0 beta really only provides two features to most end users:
1. It enables instant search in Outlook (under Tools:Instant Search).
2. It builds an index of your files and folders.
It is not a complete product at this stage. The good news is that a new version of the 3.0 beta should be out in the relatively near future. This version should come with an operational user interface and provide the features you are used to.
You may be wondering why you're able to search at all given the information above. The answer is that Windows Search Companion was set as your default search tool when the WDS 3.0 beta was installed. As such, your searches are now being processed through the search tool that came packaged with Windows. This tool works, but it is not nearly as fast or user-friendly as WDS.
At this point, you have two options. If Office 2007 beta is important to you (more so than WDS) you can keep that and install the next WDS 3.0 beta when it is released. If WDS is more important than Office 2007 you can roll back to your previous version of Office and reinstall WDS version 2.6 (or 2.6.5 if you are in an enterprise environment).
The fact that people were not aware that they would lose a great deal of WDS functionality when upgrading to Office 2007 beta is unfortunate. We are using what we've learned to improve future releases.

I have a related problem with the searchindexer. Mine has been running for approximetly two days and negatively affecting the performance of my machine.
I do not have WDS 2.6.5 installed nor do I see the magnifying glass on my system tray.
Is there a way of reducing the time take by the indexer Possibly turning it off
Thanks.

Hi Gary,
Sorry to take so long responding - I didn't realize there was a new question in this thread.
Did you have WDS 2.6.5 installed when you installed Office 2007 beta If so, you may be seeing the 2.6.5 indexer running. It shouldn't be slowing down your system as we "back off" indexing while the computer is in use.
If you do, indeed, have 2.6.5 installed on your machine could you please do the following:
1. Right click on the magnifying glass in the system tray and select Desktop Search Options.
2. Select Advanced in the nav pane and make sure that Prioritize indexing is unchecked.
If, for some reason, indexing still interferes with your work you can pause the indexing process by doing the following:
1. Right click on the magnifying glass in the system tray and select Indexing Status.
2. Here you can tell WDS to snooze. You can even specify how long you would like it to snooze.
